Many people think that presenting your sports club on a pitch is the most important thing. But that’s so wrong because of many reasons. The first reason for having a website for a sports club, besides performing well on the pitch, is to connect and bring your team, players, and fans together in one place.

Building and expanding your fan base is as important as building your team base. One of the goals is always to make a noticeable brand from your sports club and monetize it in the best way.

A website allows your fans to stay updated on all club information, player profiles, upcoming events and game details, a leaderboard, and other club-related information.

How to Find the Perfect WordPress Theme for Your Sports Club

While planning to purchase the best WP theme for your sports club, paying attention to these things is essential.

  • The theme should have an about page to introduce visitors to the club’s history, background information, club owners, trophies, etc.
  • Besides the about page, there should also be a contact form or section that would display all the ways your fans and visitors can contact you to ask a question or leave some feedback.

  • To present the club’s players, we recommend you to have a players listing page. On that page, visitors can have a complete detailed list of all the players. But also, information about their background and performance in the club.
  • You can also dedicate a page where you will list all the upcoming matches and a leaderboard. It can represent a chart that will show how many points your club has, including other teams’ points.
  • You can include a slider or a gallery on the front page (landing page) to display images from the most recent club events or matches.
  • When it comes to monetization, having your brand is crucial. It would help if you considered creating merchandise that you can sell to generate new revenue for your club. You can sell it via WooCommerce, so if that’s your plan, you should choose the theme that can integrate with WooCommerce.
  • Finally, the most challenging aspect is pricing. When choosing a theme for a sports club, one of the deciding factors should be the price.

Every site needs a good theme and that is a fact. The only issue with this is that you have to find the perfect theme for your type of site. Not all themes go well with all types of sites. And in some cases, it is better to have a simpler theme rather than a complex in-depth one.

A moving and/or storage company website won’t have a lot of visitors on a daily basis because people don’t move every day or rent out storage very often. Instead, they come to your site in order to rent out your services once in a while but that does not mean they are going to be visiting your site every day.

In order to guarantee that people will opt for your business rather than someone else’s, you must pay close attention to the website design or should I say the theme of your site because that plays a big role. Your site has to look modern, clean, and in some ways simple in order for people to take it seriously.

Also, I would like to add that you should think about adding at least one call to action on your site in order to convert visitors into customers. There are many ways in which one could achieve this, so be sure to check out all of them and find the one that suits your site the most.

Now, let’s get into finding the perfect WordPress theme for your moving and/or storage company website!

1. Ekko

Ekko

Ekko is a great theme that is well suited for all kinds of sites, not just moving and/or storage company sites. It is an all-around theme that consists of many features and tools. It comes with well over 250 original template blocks, 40+ content elements, 60+ predesigned pages, and more.

Because it comes with so many template blocks that are pre-designed, you are guaranteed to create a gorgeous site the second you add them to your page. It also has a lot of other things that you can add like customer reviews which are very handy since they show your other visitors that people are happy with your services.

All in all, this is a very versatile theme capable of suiting all kinds of websites.

2. FastRoad

FastRoad

Here we have another theme using which you can create a great-looking site in no time at all. Its vast number of prebuilt elements is a guarantee that you will come up with a design that you will like. The theme is also very mobile-friendly which is important because a lot of your visitors will be visiting your site via mobile devices.

The theme contains a lot of plugins that are going to help you out in creating a fully functional site and also adding engaging content.

3. MoveMe

MoveMe

With this WordPress theme, you will be able to create a fresh-looking and very responsive site. This theme is intended for businesses that are oriented towards moving, storage, and the transportation of goods and other odds and ends.

Don’t think that every site which picks up this theme will look the same. On the contrary, every site will look different and unique. I particularly like how the entire homepage layout looks and how very responsive it is.

With this theme, you can also add contact and quote forms which are a must when it comes to sites that are about moving and/or storage. The theme is also compatible with the WooCommerce plugin meaning you can create an online store for your business if you need one.

4. MoveCo

MoveCo

Yet another great theme that specializes in sites revolving around moving, transportation, and storage. This theme has all of the necessary components and features needed to create a great site. This is amazing because you won’t have to spend a whole lot of time coding and creating custom functionalities from scratch.

The theme has clean fonts and other great design features using which you can create very good-looking visuals for your site. You can change the visual style of almost any element provided by this theme so that it resembles your brand more than before.

5. Wise Move

Wise Move

And last but not least is Wise Move. With this modern-looking theme, you are going to be able to create a great-looking site that seems very professional and clean.

It is a great theme using which you can create any type of site out there, no matter what it is about. It is particularly great if you are offering any type of service (in this case moving and/or storage services).

It is really flexible, modern, and customizable. In addition to that, it is compatible with all of the current browsers out there so you don’t have to worry if everybody will be able to use your site. It is also compatible with all mobile devices which is very important since a lot of people prefer to use their mobile phones when browsing the web.

The theme comes with user menu and main menu support so you can rest assured that all of these things will work properly and without any fuss.

Verdict

If you are in any kind of business that is offering services connected to moving and/or storage, then one of these 5 themes should do the trick in regards to your site’s design.

All of these themes are well-thought-out and they look and work pretty good. They are all compatible with all devices and browsers. And they are also packed with useful tools and features that will allow you to create a great and functional site.

I find travel fascinating, and I have been traveling for as long as I can remember. It is exciting and inspiring to discover new countries, cultures, and beautiful places around our beautiful world.

Unfortunately, in these turbulent times, travel is limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is better to stay safe at home at the moment. However, an alternative to physical travel can be to start a WordPress travel blog and thus discover the world but differently.

Those of you who use WordPress know that it is not easy to find a suitable theme because there are tons of themes available, both free and premium themes from all WordPress themes providers.

However, I decided to create a WordPress travel blog with a randomly selected free WordPress theme.  In the WordPress theme repository, I searched for “travel,” and I came up with lots of attractive WordPress travel themes.

I just picked a random theme, and it turned out as Blossom Travel, a free WordPress travel blog theme from Blossom Themes which offers both free and premium WordPress themes.

So I rolled up my shirt sleeves and started my little project. Let’s see how I proceeded and how the result turned out.

How to Create a WordPress Travel Blog With the Blossom Travel Theme

Let’s continue and take a closer look at the theme itself.

Blossom Travel Theme Settings

Blossom Travel first glance.

If we look at the front page of my blog when I installed Blossom Travel, it doesn’t look very attractive (yet). However, it is just a first glance with basic settings, and we haven’t started with the customizations (yet). But let’s roll up the sleeves and get started with some customization.

As you have probably noticed by now, there is no theme options or theme options panel. You make all the customizations via the Live Customizer. All changes and configurations are in real-time.

To start the Customizer, you can do so via the menu on the left under AppearanceCustomize. Or if you are on the front page of your website, you will find a Customize link in the left corner. Click any of the options to launch the Customizer.

You make all the customizations in the Blossom Travel theme via the Live Customizer.

If you have installed WordPress themes lately, you are probably familiar with the Customizer. It is where all the fun happens! Let’s take at walk-trough on what tabs and content are available in the Blossom Travel theme (free version).

For those who want to use WooCommerce can make the settings for Store notice, Product Catalog, etc.

  • Additional CSS – If you feel brave or have knowledge of CSS can add custom CSS code.

Blossom Travel Customization

My intension is to create an excellent travel blog with Blossom Travel. Since my installation is clean, I need to create everything from scratch, such as customization of the design, blog posts, pages, and finally a shop, to have something to present.

Categories – The first thing I do is create some categories with beautiful countries around our world.

Create categories for your topics.

Furthermore, I created some blog posts and pages with suitable images from Pixabay and Unsplash that provide free images you can use for your websites.

Create blog posts and pages.

The pages I created are the following About us and a Contact page using the Contact Form 7 plugin that I initially installed.

Create a Contact page using the Contact Form 7 plugin.

Menu – Time to create a menu that is a navigation bar for visitors. You can create menus via the Customizer or the dashboard, AppearanceMenus. I choose to create my menu via the customizer you see in the picture below.

create a menu that is a navigation bar for visitors.

Create and add the categories, pages, and more you want to present on the menu as a navigation to your visitors.

Moreover, I also added a new Header image perfect for a vacation trip. Furthermore, I changed the website colors via the customizer to suit my taste.

I also went through all the tabs in the customizer and made small adjustments where needed. It is a flexible theme with many configuration options so it might take a while!

Take a look at how my WordPress travel blog named Planet Wayfarer turned out below. As I mentioned before, I wanted to create a travel website with a clean look and feel. I am more than happy with the result. What do you think?

This is how my WordPress travel blog turned out.

Setting Up the Shop

My idea is also to set up an online shop using the WooCommerce plugin, which I initially installed.

Before we go any further, I want to point out that my shop will be installed with minimal features.

Furthermore, I recommend you read on how to set up a shop in Woocommerce. There are many tutorials available, but this guide – How to Set Up a New WooCommerce Store from WooCommerce works great to get you started.

Create a WordPress Travel Blog - Create a new empty page and name it- Shop.

First, I need a specific page on which my shop should be located. So I create a new empty page called – Shop. Then I need to point out which page I should use for the shop in WooCommerce. Go to WooCommerceSettingsProducts – point out your shop page and save.

Create a WordPress Travel Blog - The shop is empty.

Let’s take a look at what my shop currently looks like.

As you can see, my shop looks pretty empty at the moment. So I need some products to present to visitors. Since it is a travel website, I will recommend and offer travel books.

I’m adding some products via the WooCommerceProductsAdd New tab in my dashboard.

Create a WordPress Travel Blog - Add products in WooCommerce.

When ready, my shop looks like this.

Create a WordPress Travel Blog - When ready, my shop looks like this.

Minimalistic, however, I like the look and feel.

I set up the shop with the simplest means, and you can, of course, use all the great features in WooCommer as payment, shipping, and more if needed.

In Conclusion

I’m done building my WordPress travel blog even though you can choose to customize the theme much more. There are many features, options, and custom widgets available.

However, because I like the minimalist style, I chose a clean design, but you can style your site according to your liking and needs.

I am very happy with the design and layout of my travel blog.

Blossom Travel is a flexible WordPress theme from Blossom Themes and it comes with various opportunities to create a pleasant and attractive travel website. However, you can easily use the theme for any kind of blog.

The final word is that I like the Blossom Travel theme very much. It is easy to build an attractive website with a great look and feel.

If you want additional features and support, there is also a premium version available – Blossom Travel Pro.

Good luck with building your new travel website with the Blossom Travel WordPress theme.

To give you more clarity, let’s understand this with an example:

If you’re a food enthusiast or an aspiring chef, sharing your ideas with others and receiving feedback comes with some degree of satisfaction, if not happiness. Maybe, when you start writing about food, the floodgates just open, and you can’t stop going. But of course, you already know this; the problem is figuring out where to start.

If you want to create a website, you may want to start by thinking about the components of a good website. WordPress is one of the best and most popular content management system (CMS) for any website. It drives more than a third of all sites on the planet.

It is popular since it is easy to work around and comes with tons of plugins, themes, and add-ons. All these resources facilitate the straightforward creation of a holistic website, even if someone has never created one before.

You may be thinking about how difficult it is to create a website. However, it’s not more complicated than preparing a new meal; all you need is a recipe. In this piece, we will give you the perfect one with which you can have a website up and running in no time.

Things You Need for Your Food Recipes Blog

To get all the components of your website right, you need a few things:

WordPress – You can have the site installed on your browser or your local server (on your computer).

A Food Recipes Blog Theme – A good food blog theme is essential since it speaks to your taste. You can take a free theme, but that isn’t the way to go if you’re hoping for a classy and outstanding website. We have one that might just suit your needs – Ranna.

WordPress Plugins – Some plugins are crucial for your website to run well. We will tell you which ones those are.

Excellent Photography – After making your meals, you’ll need beautiful photography to display your food best. The images will form a vital part of your website and attract people to read your blogs.

Here are a few steps on how you set up your food recipes blog:

1. Choose Your WordPress Hosting

You can choose your WordPress hosting from several choices.

You can choose your WordPress hosting from several choices.

WP Engine offers managed to host. It means that the company has backed up your website and can restore it in case you lose data. With this hosting, you don’t have to think about installations, updates, or backups; all are taken care of by your hosting provider. You’ll have to pay for the services at $29 per month.

You can also try Flywheel, another company that offers the same functions but at a lower price of $15 per month.

Finally, you can try the cheapest and quite reliable option of the list, Bluehost. This hosting company offers its services at $3.49 a month and comes with a quick installation option for your WordPress website.

2. Choose a WordPress Theme

Creating a website from scratch isn’t easy, especially if you haven’t done it before. It is why WordPress provides themes. A good food recipes blog theme has to have a user-friendly interface along with high customizability. If you’re expecting your blog to become a world-beater and stand out, there are a few things that you can only add to it by use of the right theme.

A food website works with the users’ visual senses; therefore, a good one has to be beautiful. You want your website to have a clean layout so that your visitors find it easy to navigate around your blogs. You can find the list of 14 best recipes WordPress themes.

All these and more are qualities that you add to your website with the right theme. One of the best choices you could make is Ranna Food & Recipe WordPress Theme.

One of the best Food and Recipe WordPress theme is Ranna.

Ranna also comes with readymade pages to which you just have to add content. These pages include two homepages for your landing page. It is compatible with Gutenberg (the new WordPress block editor), but it also comes with a preinstallation of the Elementor page builder. With these two, you can create pages by dragging and dropping elements onto your pages to create. The One-Click Demo Installer enables you to select and install demo by making just a single click.

Ranna is equipped with the lazy loading feature so that your pages don’t slow down with the addition of images. Check out the demo here.

3. Install Necessary Plugins

One of the aspects that make WordPress so popular is the availability of plugins that enhance the functionality of websites. If you want to unlock your site’s full potential, we recommend installing and activating a few plugins. However, using our theme, Ranna, you save yourself a lot of money and trouble since it comes with many preinstalled plugins and capabilities. Still, you might need several extra plugins.

For instance, if you want your website to be secure from spam, add the Akismet plugin. You may also download and install the Yoast SEO plugin that gives your pages and posts better rankings on search engines such as Google with search engine optimization.

Alternatively, if you add an SEO friendly recipe plugin, you can also write SEO friendly recipes. Therefore, Google and other search engines will display your recipes with additional information, such as preparation time, food image, and rating. Being a WordPress developer takes time and learning. They are real professionals with a lots of skills. In order for you to become one, you have to invest countless resources and hours to create a WordPress theme. It’s a laborious activity if you want to create a decent theme. A best-selling theme requires intense research, professional coding skills, much patience, solid marketing, and a little bit of good luck.

However, it’s pretty straightforward to create a basic WordPress theme.

There are a few reasons why you should try to create a theme. First, there is no better way to learn than through practice so that you will learn a lot about WordPress. Second, you will sharpen your coding skills. Finally, you will become a genuine WordPress theme developer, an accomplishment you can be proud of!

Without any further ado, here is a beginner’s guide to creating a WordPress theme. It won’t teach you how to design a new best-selling theme, but it’s the perfect start.

The Components of a WordPress Theme

People who have used WordPress for at least a few months have probably heard about the functions.php or index.php files. But you’ll probably need a short recap of the components of a WordPress theme before creating your first theme:

  • header.php: a global file that displays a web page’s header.
  • footer.php: a global file that displays a web page’s footer.
  • sidebar.php: the file responsible for managing the sidebars. The users insert the content into these files through the WordPress dashboard.
  • index.php: a vital file. A theme won’t run without this file. By default, it displays the latest blog posts.
  • style.css: a file that contains the CSS stylesheet and specifies the theme name and its author. It’s another must-have for a WordPress theme.

Setting Up a Working Environment

Local by Flywheel is an effective options for creating a testenvironment.

Before you can create the first files, you need to set up a working environment. It’s the base of the site that will run on your WordPress theme.

There are two options for setting up a working environment:

  1. An online testing site. This method is used less frequently, but it works just fine. In plain English, you buy a domain name and a hosting package to test themes, plugins, or other things.
  2. A local development environment. This approach is more effective. You can install some software to create a local environment. Local by Flywheel or DesktopServer are two effective options for creating the environment. Both are relatively simple to install and configure. Just follow the instructions listed on the official sites. Local by Flywheel and DesktopServer has versions for Windows and Mac.

Create the Theme’s Folder

Go to the wp-content/themes and create a folder with the name of your theme.

No matter your choice of a working environment, you have to go to the wp-content/themes and create a folder with the name of your theme. It will store the theme’s file.

index.php and style.css

These two files are the cornerstone of every WordPress theme. A basic theme may consist only of these two files.

You should learn about the WordPress hierarchy to better understand the role of index.php. In simple words, it’s the ultimate fallback file. If a user wants to visit a particular page from the WordPress hierarchy that doesn’t exist, WordPress displays index.php. That’s why you can’t create a WordPress theme without index.php.

Open your text editor of choice (even Notepad works fine) and save a blank file as index.php. Do the same for style.css and add these lines of text:

/*
Theme Name: My First Theme
Theme URI: https://testsite.local/
Author: Daniel Pintilie
Author URI: https://wppluginsify.com/
Description: My first WordPress theme
Version: 1
License: GNU General Public License v2 or later
License URI: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
Tags: clean, basic
*/

Replace “Theme Name” with the name of your theme. Do the same for the theme URI, author, author URI, description, and tags.

This text is mandatory so that WordPress can identify the theme. You have to name and describe your theme and choose a few representative tags. style.css contains all the CSS styling information.

Once you have completed this step, you have created your WordPress theme, and you could stop there. But it’s only a very basic version that lacks any functionality.

Useful Hint: Each WordPress installation comes with a default WordPress theme developed by a skilled team of developers. Consequently, it’s a good idea to study each file of a theme. For instance, check the index.php and style.css files to learn more about how these files look for a complex theme.

Other Noteworthy Files

Here are a few noteworthy files that are vital for any theme.

Under no circumstances, your current theme will win a design award. It will be a long journey until your theme is decent. Consider your new index.php and style.css files as the embryo of your theme. You need more files to reach the desired maturity. Here are a few noteworthy files that are vital for any theme.

Templates Files

You are free to add your own files to your theme, but the following ones are recognized by WordPress. The list isn’t exclusive but has only the most important one:

  • home.php: the default home page. It displays the latest blog posts if you decide to go for a static front page (select from your WordPress dashboard Settings > Reading).
  • single.php: the template for a post. If your theme is missing a single.php file, it will display index.php.
  • page.php: the default file to render when a page is queried.
  • category.php: the default file to render when a category is queried.
  • search.php: used when the user performs a search query.

functions.php

This file is almost equally important as index.php, even though a theme can theoretically exist without it. The functions.php file is responsible for the entire functionality of the theme. For instance, you place the following code inside functions.php to allow users to add a favicon:

function blog_favicon() {
echo “;
 }
add_action(‘wp_head’, ‘blog_favicon’);

Use a Starter Theme

Building a working theme from scratch on the first try is unrealistic. It’s only suitable for learning purposes. Instead, use a starter theme to streamline the crafting of a WordPress theme.

Create your own theme with Underscores.

Underscores

Use UnderStrap for your WordPress theme project.

UnderStrap

Sage is a great WordPress starter theme with a modern development workflow.

Sage

These themes are a few massively used starter themes. They include a limited set of files—just enough to make a theme with limited options.

Working with a starter theme is relatively simple. Just follow these steps:

  1. Choose and download your favorite starter theme.
  2. Install and activate it on your chosen working environment.
  3. Go to Appearance > Theme editor and edit the files you want.
  4. Upload files via FTP or through cPanel to extend the theme’s functionality.

Use Beaver Themer

Beaver Themer is an add-on for Beaver Builder, the famous WordPress page builder.

Someone once said that there is a plugin for everything. I was reticent to believe that there was a plugin for creating a complete WordPress theme, but there is!

Beaver Themer is an add-on for Beaver Builder—a famous WordPress page builder. Indeed, it doesn’t offer the complete freedom provided by a starter theme, but it’s a huge step forward. More or less, it enables people with no coding skills to design a functional WordPress theme.

Beaver Themer is a plugin add-on, so you have to use both Beaver Builder and Beaver Themer on your site. Go to the WP Beaver Builder home page and click on the Try a Live Demo button to test Beaver Themer for free.

The idea behind this plugin is simple: users can create templates and theme components. For instance, you can create a template for a custom post page or a type of header or particular sidebar as a reusable component. It’s not the easiest plugin to use, but create a WordPress theme from scratch isn’t simple either.

Create a Child Theme

Creating a child theme is different from creating a theme. If you want to develop and sell a theme, this approach isn’t feasible. But you are probably reading this article because you want to learn more about theme development. Eventually, you will develop themes. Under these circumstances, it makes sense to improve your skills by creating and tweaking a child theme.

Before learning how to create a child theme, let’s recap parent and child themes. A child theme inherits the look and functionality of a parent theme but with a bunch of modifications that are separate from the parent theme’s functions.

Here is how to create a child theme:

  1. Go to the theme directory and create a new folder for the child theme. For your convenience, name it parent_theme_name_child.
  2. Create a style.css file. Open your editor, add the below comment, and save the file.

/*
Theme Name:   Twenty Twenty Child
Theme URI:    http://yourwebsite.com/twentytwenty-child/
Description:  My first child theme
Author:       Daniel Pintilie
Author URI:   https://wppluginsify.com
Template:     twentytwenty
Version:      1.0.0
Tags:         black, green,
Text Domain:  twenty-twenty-child
*/

Pay close attention to theme name and template; theme name is the name of the child theme, while the template is the name of the parent theme.

While the child theme loads, it checks for the existence of various files. If a particular file is within the child theme, then it’s used. Otherwise, the child theme uses the file from the parent theme.

Worth-Mentioning Tips

As you can see, there are many ways to build a theme. Whichever way you choose, it takes a lot of time and serious work to craft a decent product. It’s an amazing feeling when you finish your first theme.

Check out the following suggestions to build a better WordPress theme.

  • Learn how to code. I tried to avoid adding snippets of code within this post. Usually, any sequence of code scares non-coders. This article aimed to show you that it is possible to create a WordPress theme with limited knowledge of coding, but you considerably limit your chances of creating a cool theme without coding.
  • Learn HTML, CSS, and PHP. HTML and CSS are relatively simple to learn, and there are tons of online resources in this respect. PHP is a whole different story. It requires a lot more effort to understand and write code.
  • Be patient and work hard. Working on your own WordPress theme sounds great, but it takes a colossal volume of work. It’s impossible to estimate how much time it will take for a complete newbie to develop a competitive theme. A rough estimation is that it will take you at least a year if you work two hours per day. What do you think? Is my estimation realistic?
  • Check out the competition. If you decide to sell themes, you have to plan everything in advance. Start by studying the market and finding an unexploited niche. It’s a step you should give all your attention to.

Over to You

The chances are that you are a little bit confused after reading this article. Theme development is pretty challenging, so your reaction is understandable. But the biggest mistake you can make is to quit following your dream if you want to create a WordPress theme.

If you are a complete beginner, I recommend you start by creating a child theme and customizing it. In this way, you will learn HTML and CSS. Next, go further with a starter theme. Finally, open Notepad and write the first lines of code for your new theme. It’s not a productive approach, but it’s the most challenging.

Finally, keep in mind that nothing great can be achieved without small efforts!

In our series of interviews, we talk to André Jutras from Rough Pixels.

Rough Pixels is a WordPress theme shop based in British Columbia, Canada. They design and build attractive WordPress themes with the focus their themes should be easy-to-use, no plugin or page builder dependency, and the themes should work right out of the box.

Rough Pixels has a dozen attractive WordPress themes in their portfolio. Furthermore, all their themes are Gutenberg block and Classic editor ready. I must say I am a big fan of their themes, especially their latest theme – Prologe.

André Jutras is an experienced web designer with over 14 years of website design and has worked with content management systems such as Movable Type, Joomla, and WordPress.

He later started Rough Pixels, a successful WordPress theme shop with elegantly designed themes suitable for all kinds of blogs and websites.

To find out more, I reached out to André and asked some questions about Rough Pixels. Let’s find out more about Rough Pixels and André. Shall we?

10 Questions to André Jutras from Rough Pixels

Q1. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

André Jutras from Rough Pixels

My name is André, and I’m the owner (and jack-of-all-trades) for the WordPress theme site called Rough Pixels. Being the only individual running the show, I’m the designer, developer, manager, accountant, support team, and everything else in between!

On average, I work 7-days per week and up to 10 hours each day, so I really don’t get official days off, but I try to give myself enough breaks throughout the day.

I work from my home office in the country surrounded by trees, mountains, ranches, and yes, even wildlife!

I work from my home office, which is a great way to work – especially living out in the country because I’m surrounded by trees, mountains, ranches, and yes, even wildlife! One of the best things about being out here is being able to sit out on the back deck with an iced caramel coffee, overlooking the scenery as far as the eye can see. What could be better?

Q2. How did you first get involved with WordPress?

A long, long, time ago, before I even knew about WordPress, I was designing Joomla templates as I was transitioning away from being an independent website designer. I did this for about three years at which point I soon become aware of other content management systems.

Movable Type was one, but it was also around this time that I was discovering an up-and-coming blogging platform called WordPress.

Back then, I was fascinated with Movable Type for its professional attributes and extensive capabilities. However, I believe it was around 2005 when I can attribute the discovery of WordPress from a website client I had at the time. He needed some work done to his blog, and if I remember correctly, he was using the Kubrick theme. I guess you can say the rest is history!

Q3. Rough Pixels build themes for WordPress; tell us why you chose that niche?

When I saw how popular WordPress was becoming, I realized there was a lot of potentials if I were to expand my business endeavors with it. For obvious reasons, it didn’t take long for me to come to the conclusion that this was the direction to go. I mean, look at where WordPress is now!

I’ve been lucky to have experienced the many facets of WordPress. Of course, when learning anything new, there were many failures over the years, but I was determined to learn from my mistakes.

Designing for WordPress will always involve something new to learn and the more I dug deeper, the choice of pursuing themes became both evident and a reality.

I could have stayed with Joomla templates, but with the insane growth of WordPress and the opportunities it brought; it made sense that WordPress was the solution.

Q4. What challenges did you face in building Rough Pixels?

Rough Pixels wasn’t the first and only theme site that I’ve owned. In fact, over the last 14 years, I’ve had a couple of other sites, each having their own set of challenges. The most common problem is the intense competition within the growing market saturation of themes.

For Rough Pixels, it’s been especially difficult because when I started to build it, the competition from other theme sites, authors, and theme marketplaces had already reached the pinnacle of saturation.

For anyone wanting to get started in this market now is going to find it almost futile. However, I consider myself luckier than most because I’ve done this for so many years, I am familiar with the industry and can apply the experience that I’ve gained. Unfortunately, there is still a challenge compared to what it used to be just 6 years ago.

Another challenge is trying to dedicate enough attention to the blog that I have on the site. Being the only person running the show, most of my time is taken up with theme development, so the blog suffers.

When I first built Rough Pixels, I wasn’t sure if I would have a blog, although I think having one is necessary for these types of sites. I still need to organize myself to get in the habit of writing blog posts. I’ve even considered having sponsored guest bloggers…but we will see.

Q5. What makes Rough Pixels stand out from other shops? Why should people use a Rough Pixels theme?

That is a really good question because I think most theme shops stand out from others in one way or another.

For Rough Pixels, I can easily claim the simplicity of how I build my themes. For example:

1.    My themes are made without bloated code as I have seen so many others do. This is a huge benefit when we talk about load times, stability, compatibility, and even security. The more you put in, the more chances something will break.

2.    Common sense theme options that make using the theme and customizing your website easier.

3.    No plugin or page builder dependency; my themes work right out of the box! One of my biggest frustrations is how many themes require and lock you into using a page builder. Don’t get me wrong, their demos are impressive. Unfortunately, you need a page builder to make them look like they do. I can probably write an article just on that topic alone!

4.    WordPress standards are an absolute necessity. My history of building themes involves submitting them to the WordPress theme directory where they get reviewed and MUST pass 100% before they go live. This also means that my premium themes are based on WordPress coding standards to ensure stability, compatibility, scalability, and having no worries when WordPress releases an update; your theme still works.

5.    Support is just as important as the theme itself. My philosophy for providing quality support is paramount when it comes to my themes. Customers are often shocked when they get a fast response compared to other sites. I also believe that if you cannot provide good support, even for free themes, you should not be in this business because a big part of doing this involves helping those who need it. A customer should not have to worry about waiting days for support, or worse, being totally ignored.

6.    Rough Pixels makes it easier to adapt to the ever-changing aspects of WordPress. A good example is the Gutenberg block editor. I make my themes compatible for both the block and classic editors, so if you are one who still wants to use the classic editor, I’ve got you covered!

6. You recently redesigned Rough Pixels – Can you tell us why, how the process went and what difficulties you experienced?

Rough Pixels redesigned.

It’s funny to say this, but I can design themes for others, but when it comes to my own site(s), I’m never happy with them. Throughout 2019, I kept staring at my site and thinking, I need to change this; I don’t like the layout; my theme tutorials are not as organized as they should be, and so on.

There were even a couple moments in time when I considered changing the site from WordPress to run on Joomla because of the direction WordPress was going. For a complex website such as Rough Pixels, Joomla makes sense. However, the problem with switching to a new CMS when I’ve already been running the site on WordPress for over a year made me scrap the idea.

Even more so when you consider how many customers and members would be grossly affected by the change. Not to mention the fact that I honestly cannot fathom doing that to them because they are more important than what I want for myself.

I still had to make major changes. So throughout the summer of 2019, I made copious notes on what needed to change. What things were needed but not required, and what were wishful changes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the ball rolling until mid-December because of other projects I had going.

Another problem that I encountered was to figure out what to do about my free themes. Should I keep them on the WordPress.org theme directory or make them available right from the Rough Pixels website? For the most part, I wanted to keep them at WordPress. But they have a serious problem with their theme review queue (a waitlist) that was getting as long as 7 months.

On top of that, theme authors are only allowed to submit 1 theme to the queue and must wait until that one gets reviewed and goes live before submitting another. This meant that it would limit how many free themes I can give back to the community. In this case, it would be 1 theme per year. That’s insane!

Needless to say, I decided to make my free themes downloadable from Rough Pixels. So, I had to integrate that concept into the redesign of my site. Even to this day, I am still making adjustments. In the meantime, I’ve created a special membership to access all my free themes.

But there was still at least one more challenge I had to face…I was going to rebuild the entire site using the Gutenberg block editor. It’s funny because I design themes for Gutenberg, but I was never really a fan of it, so I figured, hey, let’s try this out and see just how well it performs for a site like this. It turned out to be OK. I’m also planning to write an article about my personal experience tackling this; things I liked, things I didn’t, and how I succeeded with it.

Q7. What is your typical working day at Rough Pixels?

Working from home is an amazing experience, especially because I live in a log house on 7 acres of forested land. So, I make it a habit of getting out in nature as often as I can. I’ve mentioned that I work 7 days per week and up to 10 hours each day, so it’s nice to get outside.

I sit out on the deck and prepare myself for the day.

My days can be long, but I generally get up in the morning, have breakfast, make tea or coffee, check emails. Then if the weather is nice, I will sit out on the deck and prepare myself for the day. Eventually, I head downstairs and metaphorically plug myself into the computer and begin work.

There are very few if any support requests. Which I think is a good sign. So I will usually spend the rest of the day and evening designing, coding, jumping on Twitter. Continuously thinking “how can I improve the next new theme?” I often check out WordPress articles on blogs to keep up to the changing times and to find out what is trending for themes.

There are still home duties to attend to, whether it’s cleaning, splitting firewood, landscaping, shoveling snow.

There are still home duties to attend to, whether it’s cleaning, splitting firewood, landscaping. Shoveling snow (in winter), or heading into town for food and supplies. Overall, I keep busy.

Q8. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working with WordPress & Rough Pixels?

I have a habit of sitting at the computer all day and night. So it feels like I don’t have too much free time. However, being where I am, I try to get out and about. Even relaxing on the back deck in the summer for a half-hour is nice!

One of the biggest problems when you work on the computer, you are sitting long hours in front of a monitor which is not overly healthy. I have a few inches in the middle to prove that. Doing some form of exercise is critical for this work-style!

Q9. What are your future plans for Rough Pixels (or any other upcoming/ongoing projects?)

My original plans were to release a new theme every month to build a massive portfolio and offer tons of themes. The problem with this ideology of “more is better” is the wrong way of thinking because the quality is often sacrificed.

When rebuilding Rough Pixels, I had to give serious thought on the direction I wanted to take the site as we approached 2020. I decided that quality and ease-of-use were the two most important factors for the mission statement of Rough Pixels.

My goal now is to refocus on improving existing themes to make them even better while designing new ones over the course of this year.

One additional project to work on is the Rough Pixels affiliate program. I’m not sure how many people know about, so the plan is to put some effort to market the program to anyone that loves writing about WordPress. Even more so if they focus on themes.

Q10. Whom should we interview next & why?

WOW, hard question to answer because there are so many to consider. Not sure I can name just one. But I can mention a couple, Ben from LinkWP.com.  Jeffrey with his EditorsKit plugin (which is in my top 5 list of plugins) and another growing project called ShareAblock.

Final Words

I thank André Jutras from Rough Pixels for taking the time to attend and answer all the questions for this interview. Much appreciated. I wish André Jutra’s best of luck with Rough Pixels. Your WordPress themes are awesome.

In today’s article, we take a stroll down memory lane and look back about ten years. We take a glance at how popular WordPress theme providers website design looked like in the past.

I hardly remember what websites I had at that time. However, I started with WordPress 2008 and I remember a lot of these WordPress theme providers listed in today’s article around the current time.

I have listed 20 popular WordPress theme providers that have been around and in the business for over ten years. It’s incredible to see how their website designs have evolved and changed over the years.

I have used two tools to grab screenshots and get information when these theme providers registered their websites.

The tools I’ve used is the Wayback Machine – Internet Archive, which is a fantastic site to see how the web looked in the past. They have over 411 billion web pages saved by today, which is impressive numbers. The other tool is Whois.com to generate domain information.

So here comes a blast from the past. A tip is to compare the images below with how these popular WordPress theme providers website designs look like today. It may differ a great deal!

Wrapping Up

Pretty fun to see what these popular WordPress theme providers website designs looked like ten years ago! There are not many similarities to their designs in the past compared to their website look and feel today.

However, time changes and trends come and go. Do you remember what the websites looked like in the nineties? Hopefully, we don’t see that trend coming back (for a long time)!

In addition to the WordPress theme providers included in the list above, several other WordPress theme providers have been in the theme business for as long. However, I could not capture any good screenshots of what these sites looked like a decade ago.

But I hope this blast from the past creates memories for everyone who remembers what it was like in the WordPress theme business and how these popular WordPress theme providers website designs looked like ten years ago.
